For fastening gussets to shed trusses, is it best to use nails or bolts?

My best advice for fastening gusset plates to shed trusses is to either use nails or screws. If you use bolts with washers, you would run the risk of the nuts coming loose and having a truss that is going to be compromised structurally.

The other step you should take is to glue the gusset plate to the truss for added strength.

I have included a picture of a shed truss showing the nailing pattern you should use on both sides of an interior truss. I typically will nail on a gusset plate (and I like to make my gusset plates out of 1/2" plywood) with 10 nails or screws on each side, 5 per truss end.
