WHEN PUTTING DRIP EDGE ON A SHED ROOF, WHAT IS THE PROPER PLACEMENT OVER AND UNDER THE UNDERLAYMENT AND/OR SHINGLES, PARTICULARLY ON THE HIGHER SIDE OF THE ROOF SLOPE? WANT TO MAKE SURE WATER DOESN'T GET UNDERNEATH THE SHINGLES ON THAT HIGHER SIDE. THANKS.

HI Chad, I was not aware that there was an abundance of widths for drip edge, but I would go with the wider width drip edge. What you may be seeing is both rake edge and drip edge. For your shed I would just use regular drip edge.

Hi Leslie,

This is a great question! In my earlier days of shed building I used to install drip edge all wrong!

I would tack felt paper down on the shed roof first, then install drip edge on top of the felt paper on both the gable ends and the eave.

The proper way to do this is to first install drip edge down on the eaves first (the bottom horizontal edge of your shed roof). This lets any water that gets on the roof run down the underlayment and over the drip edge.

Next you would tack down your felt paper, which would lay over the drip edge you just installed. Once done tacking your felt paper down, you will want to then place drip edge over the felt paper on the gable ends of your shed roof (see attached picture). This helps hold down the felt paper while you are shingling, and also allows wind blown water that gets under the shingles to run down the felt paper and not the roof sheathing.

On your single slope shed roof, the upper top of the roof you would want to place the drip edge over the felt paper.
