This Roof is a Low Pitch NEW
by: John

Hi again Dave,

I forgot to point out that with your roof, it's going to be less than a 3:12 roof pitch. This means that if you are wanting to shingle this roof, it's probably going to leak and you would be better off covering it with metal.

The other option if you have to go with shingles - you would have to first glue down a rubber membrane, then put your shingles down on top of that membrane.

Most roofing material suppliers have this membrane.

Rafter For Different Wall Heights
by: John

Hi Dave,

The easiest way to do this is to find a flat surface, like a garage floor where you have some space to work with.

Let's say the width from 10' wall to 8' wall is 10'. You can then take one of your 10' wall studs and one of your 8' wall studs. Lay them on your floor as if you were looking at your shed from the end. The bottoms of these 2 studs should be as is they were on your shed floor, or even.

Make sure the distance is 10' (or whatever the width of your shed is) all the way up and down.

Now you can take whatever size rafter you are using ( I suggest a 2x8) and lay this rafter so that it is positioned right on top of your wall studs. Refer to the picture showing exactly how to position this rafter. You can lay some 2x4 blocks at the top of the wall studs so you can lay your rafter on them to keep it in place.

Now you have the correct position of your rafter as it would be if you were actually building your roof assembly on top of your walls. You can now mark on this rafter where you need to make your cuts.

Cutting this rafter on your wall locations will not be an easy task, but it can be managed carefully with the use of a circular saw and a reciprocating saw, or it can be accomplished using a jig saw.

After cutting this first rafter, make sure it fits nicely on the tops of your wall studs. Of course when you have your walls in place on your shed floor, the tops of the wall will have 'top plates' on them and this is what your rafters will get nailed to.

If this explanation and task does not seem do-able for you, I can do the rafter measurements for you if I have the width of the shed you are building. You can email me at shedking@gmail.com.

There would be a charge of course for this, and the amount would be dependent on what all you would like to have.
