Lean To Shed Top Plates On Only 3 Walls

When joining wall frames together on a lean to shed, there is no double top wall plate? Correct? How do you square and join walls at corners?

Joining walls on a lean to shed
by: John

Hi John,

Great first name by the way!!

This is a great question. The second top plate will definitely help to keep the walls joined together. Most lean to sheds will have at least 2 corners where the top plates will overlap and that would probably be the back 2 corners. So the 2 side walls and the back wall would have overlapped top plates. As for not having this option where the 2 side walls meet the front taller wall, you are at least going to be able to nail the corners together after making sure the walls are plumb and square. And this is also the case with the side walls where they meet with the back wall. You will always be nailing the corners together so even though the second top plate may not be there the walls will be secured by nailing the corners together.

The first picture I included with this post shows a lean to shed with a tall front wall and the remaining 3 walls that have the second top plate.

The second lean to shed picture that I included shows all four walls having a second top plate, then the front wall has an additional shorted wall framed on top of it. So this is another option you can use when building a lean to shed. This second top framed wall on the front wall could then easily be framed to have windows in it, like transom windows for example.

I hope this helps to answer your question.
