Erecting Shed Walls So The Top Is Square

Squaring Up Shed Walls

Squaring Up Shed Walls

If I nail the sole plates to the joists and corners together as you say and then measure diagonals across the top to be sure the shed top is square, what is the best method to square it up if it is off like 1" or more? It would seem to me that putting all the nails into the floor joists is no issue, but wouldn't it be better to only add a couple nails per corner to allow for easier squaring up? Then all the others could be added once the top is racked into square. Thx.

Squaring top not walls
by: Doug

I agree your method will work just fine for squaring the walls, but the question asks about squaring the top, that is looking down on the shed floor, a plan view. The diagonals can be off. The walls have to be racked at the top and held before adding all the nails to the corners. Or are you saying that if the walls are square the top will automatically be square? It's hard to imagine proceeding to nail all the corners together without knowing 100% the top is square. Thx.

Squaring up your shed walls
by: John

Hi Doug,

I have found over the years that one of the best ways to make sure your walls get squared up properly is when you add your wall siding.

It works if you side your wall panels before standing them up, or if your walls are up already.

The best way is to start your siding on either end of your wall framing making sure the top of the siding is lined up perfectly with the top wall plate, and the long siding edge is lined up as close as you can get it to the long outside stud edge.

Then you will first nail the top of the siding to the top plates making absolutely sure it is lined up exactly with the top plate. Once you have this done, nail your siding across the top edge every 6 to 8".

Next, line up the long outside edge of the siding with the outside wall stud. You will have to either push or pull the siding to line it up, but once you do, nail it into place every 6 to 8".

This will square your wall up and get is as close as possible to being squared up. Proceed with nailing the rest of this siding panel to the wall studs, then finish siding this wall.

For the remaining walls, start adding siding in the same manner.

I can tell you that after many many years of building sheds, it's not going to be perfect because of imperfections in wood, and human error when measuring and cutting wood.

Also, if your floor framing is off one way or the other, this will also cause your wall squaring to be off.

Just do the best you can and your shed should turn out fine.
