Shed Foundations and Building a Shed FoundationHere's Tony's question about building a shed foundation.....Hello Shed Master,I am planning to build a 10x16 shed with a floor built on cement blocks. The ground varies by 6-14 inches in elevation in the area I will be building. I am planning to put down some rock to sit the blocks on. My first question is, can I just tamp down a couple inches of rock into the existing grass and then sit the cement blocks on top of that?
I am planning on putting down 4 rows of cement blocks-(4x8x16) down spaced 2 feet apart and 16 feet long.
I will place 2 blocks at each end and then center the other blocks at the 3, 6, 9, & 12 foot marks since
my floor will be built 12 inches O.C.
In order to build my walls 7.5 feet tall, but keep the peak of my structure around 12 feet tall I was
going to lay treated 2x6s flat across the cement blocks and build my floor joists perpendicular on top
of those. Does this sound like it would work? I feel that would be enough since I will have 24 points
where the 2x6s will be supported by the large blocks.
Thanks for your time and expertise in answering these questions.
Here's my answer Tony about building your shed foundation..I would only use a total of 6 piers spaced as shown, placed on at least 4" deep of rock.Over time, you may get some shifting because of your piers moving up or down with the rock, and this will be evident by your shed doors not closing properly. Just keep an eye on doors, and adjust your foundation accordingly if you can. OK Tony, piers (concrete pier blocks) are yellow, skids (4"x4" treated) are orange, and floor joists (2"x6" treated) are green..... Hope these help you out for building a shed foundation.
